Chichester Community Development Trust: Graylingwell Chapel Redevelopment
The Heritage Lottery funded Graylingwell Heritage Project demonstrated the importance of the Hospital to the local community. Inspired by this interest the Development Trust have ambitious plans to conserve the Hospital’s chapel as a heritage hub to tell the story of the Graylingwell asylum.
The Development Trust have a highly motivated and talented small team of staff with no experience of restoring and conserving a listed building and developing heritage displays. It was therefore vital for the team to acquire relevant skills and expertise. I worked with the Trust to identify training and support needs, and to apply and secure funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund’s Start Up Grant. Clare de Bathe, Trust Director, match-funded with a successful application to Architectural Heritage Fund’s Development Grant.
The Development Trust used the Heritage Lottery Fund and Architectural Heritage Fund grants to support an application to the Heritage Lottery Fund Heritage Grant. We provided range of services during the development of the application including personalised mentoring and advice, development and delivery of a suite of tailored training, management of the tendering and appointment for an architect, and assistance with the research and writing of the application and the supporting documents.
The Chichester Community Development Trust submitted a first round application for the deadline and were awarded £145,000 to develop a second round application. We worked with Trust to develop the this application and CCDT were awarded £1.3million in 2019 to restore and develop the Chapel.
