Hastings Museum and Art Gallery: Finding Our Place PHASEs 1 & 2

Project Manager

Finding Our Place: A new vision for Hastings Museum, funded by the Arts Council England’s Museum Resilience Fund, aimed to reshape the museum for the future.

By working collaboratively with the museum’s staff and a team of freelance consultants we produced a strategic document setting out a dynamic and forward-looking new vision for the museum.

With a small team with limited resources it was essential to identify a simple, clear pathway for the implementation of the vision. An achievable five-point action plan was developed with staff that set realistic goals and timescales.

The museum used the five-point plan to secure funding from the Arts Council to support marketing, business planning and a collections review, and to advocate to Hastings Borough Council the need for a staffing restructure that allowed the museum to recruit a dedicated learning officer.

The museum successfully secured the further funding from ACE to implement the plan. Finding Our Place 2: Delivering the Vision supported the museum to produce a Business Development Plan and a Marketing Plan, deliver a pilot Collections Review funding interns and consultants to implement. As a consequence of the 2 phases of work the staffing structure was reviewed to include a learning officer and to uplift the museum curator role to museum manager.
