South East Museum Development Programme: Access Review

The Hampshire Solent Museum Development Officer commissioned an access review to provide access audit training and mentoring for four Hampshire museums, and produce an access review toolkit.

To ensure the museum participants had a thorough understanding of how to do an access audit independently a personalised training plan was developed for each museum. To prepare it was essential that I had a good understanding of each museum’s site and how it was managed, as well as their key issues and challenges. To gain this insight each participant museum was asked complete a short questionnaire to identify key access issues, followed up with a telephone interview to explore areas of concern in-depth.

The training day was structured to provide museum staff at each museum with a practical experience of undertaking an audit, supported by expertise and guidance throughout the day. Follow-up information was provided depending on the needs of the museum. Each museum produced an audit with key recommendations.

From this training and support an Access Review Toolkit was produced that is available to all museums. As a self-completion tool it was essential that this toolkit was simple, clear and easy to use.
